Modified 1KZ-T turbo diesel, all-mechanical and no EGR

Recent refresh with body and paint work

Rare LHD 73-series body style

The KZJ73 is one of the more refined vintage Land Cruisers in the 70-series lineage. A coil sprung radius arm suspension was a huge step over leaf springs in the 70 series, and they had a number of unique features added to the interior, such as the “active comfort” suspension seats found in our KZJ73. And then you stack a turbocharged 3.0L 1KZ-T diesel with a five-speed R150F manual behind it, with Toyota’s venerable two-speed VF2A transfer case, and you’ve got a bulletproof platform for a build. This Prado runs the 8-inch diffs with 4.556:1 gears and a LSD, according to its G975 axle code. Also unique to the Euro-spec versions is that the 1KZ-T is non-EGR with a mechanical injection pump, eliminating a potential failure point from an aging ECU or emissions system.

This particular KZJ73 was imported from France, and it underwent a mild refresh around 5,000mi/5 years ago by the previous owner. The body was painted Slate Grey with undercoating on the rockers. The motor underwent major maintenance, including an upgraded AMC head (improved casting over original that’s less prone to cracking under high stress) with a new timing belt and water pump, new injection pump and injectors, LDA cam, and a new Toyota turbo along with a front-mount intercooler. Underneath, the suspension was lifted 5 inches with a Terrain Tamer suspension package.

While everything was apart, the rear axle was claimed to hae been serviced and new bushings were pressed in. The chassis was also sand blasted and repainted in the process. It also features a Ramsey winch, LED light bar, ARB compressor with rear locker, custom-built stainless-steel tubular bumpers, a functional snorkel, and BFG 35-inch tires. The result is one of the better driving KZJ73s we’ve had in our inventory. It steers and handles tight for a lifted Toyota, and makes good power thanks to the modified 1KZ-T, allowing it to easily run around with modern traffic unlike the stock motors.

A left hand drive 1KZ-T Prado is almost impossible to find here in the US and rust buckets typically sell at 30,000 Euros in the European market.
