This one-of-a-kind, jaw-dropping Mercury Cougar XR-7 looks like it was just driven, brand-new, off the showroom floor. The quality of this concourse-level restoration, completed by KTL Restorations of Danville, VA, is beyond compare. A true one-of-one, this vehicle was the only example produced with a power convertible top with glass rear window, in the original competition blue (Ford color code M3657A) with a black pinstripe, black leather seats, transmission, and engine configuration. Well-documented and widely discussed, this limited edition XR-7 is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
A configuration so rare it was thought to be a myth, only 66 1970 Mercury Cougar XR-7s were upgraded with the 428 Cobra Jet engine, and only 17 of those were produced with a 4-speed manual transmission. The floors are covered with mats, and the dashboard features faux wood burl common for the time period. Ford logos are built into the threshold, and small Cougar details have been embossed on the dashboard and steering wheel. Roll down windows, manually adjustable seats, and a built-in lighter creates the nostalgia of the vehicle – but no detail is faded, and every metal gleams. The center console opens sideways, and an analogue clock has been built directly into the dashboard. A full complement of gauges gives the driver a perfect sense of what is happening in the vehicle – featuring oil, temperature, amps, fuel gauges and a tachometer. A vintage radio features in the vehicle, as well as heating.
