Overview
Retired from civic duty and ready for work, this 1989 Toyota Hilux LN105 is a workhorse of a pickup. Over much of its lifetime, it was a part of an Italian Civil Protection crew, the Protezione Civile “El Castelo” di Lugo di Vicenza, which acts as volunteer fire, search and rescue, and other emergency services for the people of Lugo, an Italian town province of Vicenza. We even found photos of it from 2005, where it was helping train teachers on how to fight fires – what more could you ask for from a history of public service?
And if you’re looking for an all-business Toyota crew cab truck, this might be the right unit. Manual transmission, manually-shifted transfer case, manual windows, manual locks, and a fully-mechanical injection system means that about the only digital part to go wrong is the clock. Otherwise, this is the gears and guts you want in a do-all pickup.
This thing is the antithesis of all things modern in the truck world, and if that’s what you’re looking for, this platform is hard to beat. The Hilux’s durability is legendary, and this generation went on to define that for decades to come at Toyota. While the diesel isn’t the most powerful, lacking the additional lung capacity of its turbocharged siblings, it’s simple and easy to repair. Leaf springs and solid axles aren’t the most refined suspension package, they’re just brutally tough and low-maintenance in rough conditions; and this particular truck drives great with low wear and tear on the chassis. Whether it’s a work truck, daily driver, or first-car for a young driver, this thing will answer the call.
