Rare LHD Troopy

Overview

Upon its importation from France, the second owner of this troopy began a comprehensive overland build that included re-roofing it with a pop-up tent, swapping in a more powerful 1HD-T turbo-diesel, and building out the interior for cooking, storage, and sleeping. It’s a well thought out, lived-in overland build that has everything you need to cross the globe – and this particular truck has been all through South America to prove it, Oregon, USA to Ushuai, Argentina and back over the course of 2.5 years.

While it originally came with a 3B four-cylinder N/A diesel, this troopy was quickly upgraded to the venerable 4.2L 1HD-T turbo-diesel. Paired with the H151F five-speed, it sounds like a miniature Cummins straight-six and makes the perfect amount of power and torque for this build – nothing to crazy for the drivetrain to handle, doesn’t roll excessive amounts of coal, and gets up to highway speeds easily. The radiator was also upgraded, and the entire chassis underwent a rebuild and several maintenance cycles during Umpqua’s travels. See his build thread for complete details, but in short, the axles were rebuilt with ARB lockers, Old Man Emu’s Dakar Suspension package was installed, NATO-spec wheels were added with 235/85R16 BFG tires, and a 50 gallon auxiliary diesel tank was hung underneath.

​For the overlanding/RV side of things, the roof was cut off for a Alu-Cab Hercules pop-up camper. A counter top was added with storage internally for many of the overland systems, as well as typical kitchen gear. On the opposite side of the cabin is a bed that also doubles as a storage cabinet. Of course, the roof top camper provides enough room for two people as well. The power system control panels are behind the front passenger seat, supporting 320amp/hrs of lithium battery storage, a 2000w inverter, 130w of solar charging, all controlled by a Victron Charge Controller that spits charging duties between the solar panel and secondary alternator automatically. A 50 gallon on-board water tank holds clean water for the sink and shower systems, too. There’s also a hot-water heat exchanger for warm showers and a diesel-powered heater for cold nights. And what you’re getting is a well-sorted build too, given that it was actually used for long-distance overland trips, so it has only what it needs and nothing it doesn’t after logging thousands of miles. Despite the hard use, this troopy has been maintained by its past owners and we had very little to do other than decipher all the auxiliary toggle switches in the dash. It is a genuinely well thought-out build that was carefully built to do anything you ask of it.
