Overview

While all Land Rover Defenders are born from generations of overland adventure and military duty, this one decided to skip conscription, move to Ibiza, and take a hero dose of red leather. If you’re looking for a unique people-hauler, this Defender 110 is ready to serve.

This is “Black Storm,” a resto-modded Defender from The Landrovers, an Amsterdam-based firm specializing in custom builds. The foundation is a 1988 Defender 110 with a 200Tdi turbo-diesel, with a five-speed manual and full-time 4×4 with 4-low. They comprehensively rebuild every Defender, including the engine and drivetrain, and create some unique spins on the iconic British Box. In the case of this Black Storm, the 2-door body on a long wheelbase 110 chassis is entirely custom, flanked by two huge panoramic windows that mount flush to the body and to the rear quarter windows. Along with the Puma hood and 18-inch wheels, it modernizes the look of this Defender from every angle. The body was painted Beluga Black and sits atop a refreshed chassis, which also underwent recent maintenance here at Car Cave.

Inside, red Bentley leather bathes the interior seating and trim with warm teak wood framing the rim of the steering wheel. The back of the 110 has mile-long bench seats flanking the rear cargo area, while the front retains your standard bucket seat configuration. Diamond pleated, perforated leather accents the inset areas of all seats, helping the seats breathe a little in summer. From inside, you really appreciate the panoramic windows, too. Few vehicles offer such a wide, uninterrupted view from inside. It’s more like sitting in a box office than it is an SUV. A sound system with 6x9s and a subwoofer is also packaged in back.

All of us in the shop think this thing would make for a great transportation business, something like a more specialized party bus or chauffer work.

With seating for around 10 cozy friends, and enough red leather to rival a club, it has potential for the right business. And with the all-mechanical 200Tdi engine, it’s a workhorse powertrain that has proven to stand the test of time with ample torque and low maintenance. We’ve recently serviced the front axle, air conditioning, lighting, and clutch systems while bringing the Black Storm out of storage to ensure it’s road-ready for anything.
